MangoMania

Pine Island's 13th Annual MangoMania elevates tropical fruit to a whole new level for two days, July 11 and 12.

How many ways can you eat and play with a mango? The folks on Pine Island have thought of them all.

Pine Island celebrates its trademark summer crop with two days devoted entirely to the sweet, juicy fruit, whose distinct flavor some describe as a cross between a peach, coconut and strawberry. Known for its mango orchards and nurseries, Pine Island began celebrating its favorite fruit 13 years ago in St. James City.

Since then, the two-day festival has outgrown the island and moved just east of Matlacha to the German-American Social Club on Pine Island Road. Some 10,000 visitors come to buy and taste mangoes and mango products throughout the weekend. Live entertainment and inflatable and educational hands-on kids activities add to the fun of eating, drinking and competing.

So how many ways can you eat a mango? At MangoMania Tropical Fruit Fair, there is fresh mango, mango chutney, mango smoothies, mango ice, mango bread, mango barbecue sauce, mango hot sauce and even mango margaritas.

How many ways can you play with a mango? Compete in the cook-off, Mr. Mangohead contest, mango toss, mango hat parade, mango bake-off, biggest mango contest and, of course, mango pie-eating competition. Don't worry if you're not a mango-head yourself. Vendors sell other exotic fruits and taste treats of every flavor.

The fun starts at 9 a.m. both days at the German-American Social Club at 2101 Pine Island Rd. and continues until 5 p.m. on Saturday and 4 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is $6 for adults and free for children ages 9 and younger. Advance tickets are $5 and available at the Greater Pine Island Chamber of Commerce (3640 Pine Island Rd. in Matlacha), TIB Bank and at the festival's website www.floridascreativecoast.com. For more information, call 239-283-4842.
