Art Festival Spotlight

Original, colorful art comes to Cape Coral, Pine Island and Bonita Springs.

The Bonita Springs National Art Festival brings original art to the area.
The Bonita Springs National Art Festival brings original art to the area.
An artsy street festival, an island arts affair and a national-level outdoor exhibition – all in one glorious artful weekend: Don’t try to decide which one to attend. Hit them all; they’re within a half-hour drive of each another in Cape Coral, Pine Island and Bonita Springs.

Cape Coral Festival of the Arts: Jan. 10-11

The 24th annual street festival will attract some 85,000 people with 300 juried artisan booths lined up along the center median of Cape Coral Parkway, Cape Coral’s main thoroughfare. Downtown merchants will also be taking part in the activities with sidewalk sales and other specials during the two-day festival. Bring the whole family for children’s activities such as a bounce house and crafts, lots of fun food (chocolate ants, anyone?), and continuous live music and entertainment from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. On Saturday night, downtown businesses continue the party in the after-dark hours. Admission to the festival is free. For more information, call 239-945-1988 or visit www.capecoralfestival.com.

Florida’s Creative Coast Weekend, Pine Island: Jan. 9-11

Meanwhile, next door in Pine Island, where art galleries shack up in Matlacha’s colorful little historic wood houses along Pine Island Road, this monthly seasonal event kicks off Friday with Art Night starting at 2 p.m. Galleries extend their hours to 9 p.m. and welcome you with special treats. The theme for this particular weekend is Art & Authors. Saturday and Sunday bring guest author lectures and book signings, guided trail and kayak tours, and discounts at many Pine Island businesses – plant nurseries, restaurants and more. To learn more, call 239-283-4842 or visit www.floridascreativecoast.com.

Bonita Springs National Art Festival: Jan. 10-11

More than 200 nationally and internationally acclaimed artists make this annual festival, in its ninth year, a can’t-miss for any serious art connoisseur. Jurists select artists based on quality and originality. Their works range in media from paint, glass and photography to jewelry, clay and sculpture. While there are no admission or parking fees for this event – held in the tranquil, landscaped setting of The Promenade shopping center – the Art League, sponsor of the festival, requests an optional $3 donation from visitors to support its Center for the Arts. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. A repeat performance of the two-day festival takes place March 14-15. For details, call 239-495-8989 or visit www.artinusa.com/bonita.
